LEATHER VICTORIAN CORRESPENDENCE BOX

'MY LETTERS' Circa 1896-1902

MISS ETHEL DeWOLF

A Victorian Leather ‘My Letters’ Box containing 30+ letters and miscellaneous items belonging to a young Victorian Lady. This is a cherished collection of letters received over a few years from parents, family members, friends and guardians (one in French).

Also in the box is a collection of miscellaneous items: invitation cards, a Latin tutorial paper and a full handwritten rendition of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ and one unused very beautiful Faulkner Birthday Card.

This is a lovely collection of cherished items belonging to Miss Ethel DeWolf, who we can only assume was a well-educated and well-travelled young lady.

Emanating from a very wealthy and loving family with American connections, there is one particularly lovely letter from her mother who sailed regularly transatlantic routes Liverpool to New York on the Cunard Steam Ships and written on letter headed paper from the SS Etruria.

Ethel must have also been on these crossings as there is one brief letter she received when she was onboard addressed to Miss DeWolf, SS Oceana wishing her safe passage and a happy holiday.

This is a lovely and interesting snapshot into affluent late Victorian life, from people Miss Ethel DeWolf must have treasured, and who treasured her, as she has kept these letters so beautifully.

The condition of the box is good and sturdy with the original lock but no key.  Externally the blue leather has wear associated with age and use, internally the surfaces are very clean and in excellent condition considering the age. All the contents are in very good condition.
