A Victorian Solid Brass Footman - 19th Century Brass Plate Warmer
With decorative side carrying handles, two ornate fixed drawers to the front with serpentine tapering legs and brass finials on each corner of the top plate.
A fireside Footman was used by the Georgians and Victorians through the 19th Century as Fireside Plate Warmers where before a meal a 'Footman' (House Servant, hense the name) would place the Brass Footman beside the Dining Room Fire to warm the family and dinner guests plates.
In modern times since the invention of varying types of heating for plates, Brass Footmen have become very rare and where they have survived have been used as very desirable Decorative Antiques in period, country and modern homes with only a very few used in their original use on special occasions in houses with traditional open burning firesides.
