This Elegant J Duvelleroy Fan is in Excellent Condition with Original Box
The fine ebony shoulders have a beautiful and elegant shape, leading to exquisitely carved detailing to both guards, each highlighted with small brass inserts. The intricate design and brass detailing continue through to the sticks.
The leaf is a double layer of fine black silk embroidered with gold sparkling sequins to the front mount. The stitching is exceptionally fine and reflects the quality of the item.
There is a black velvet ribbon wrist carrier, again in lovely condition, also a platted finger hold and cord both attached to the brass handle. There would have once been a silk tassel on the finger hold which is now lost.
The original box is in strong condition with the makers label present to the inner lid, J Duvelleroy, by Appointment, London, 167 Regent Street.
Considering this fan is 130+ years old the condition is incredible. The silk, sequins and ebony structure are sound, clean and showing very little sign of wear.
Jean-Pierre Duvelleroy
Duvelleroy is a fan maker and leather goods manufacturer based in Paris, France. The house was founded in 1827 by Jean-Pierre Duvelleroy and stands today as one of the rare French fan makers still in existence.
The quality of Duvelleroys fans was exquisite. Producing fan sticks and guards only using the very best quality precious woods, horn, mother of pearl, ivory and tortoise shell. His stick makers or 'tabletiers' were exceptional craftsmen. For the leaves of his fans, he collaborated with artists such as Ingres or Delacroix. His pieces were not just fans he created exceptional items that were works of art.
The quality and reputation of Duvelleroys fans was far reaching, making fans for European Royalty and Heads of State. In 1851 Duvelleroy was awarded a prize medal at Crystal Place, after which he was appointed supplier to Queen Victoria and opened a boutique in London.
In 1995, an exhibit in England was entirely dedicated to the Fan House: 'Duvelleroy, King of Fans, Fan maker to Kings.'
