A George II Half Bushel Grain Measure, with metal cast handles. The measure bears the Weights and Measures verification stamps of George II period (1727 -1760) and the verification location number (37) of Sheffield (UK).

In England the first know examples of ensuring weights and measures are correct was introduced by the Normans but first put into statute (Law) by William the Conquerer who decreed that "The Measures and Weights should be true, and stamped, in all parts of the kingdom, as had before been ordained by law" and that these should be verified by officials by location.

A Bushel is a measure of capacity of 8 gallons (Imperial) or 36.4 litres (Metric), used for grain, corn, fruit, liquids, etc.
