19th Century

Victorian Gold and Silver Bullion Box 1882-1883

£0

Green Leather Victorian Bullion Box
Internally the box is fabulous:
One lift out shelf divided into two leather lined compartments with lifting lids. Each with gold embossing Gold / Silver with the original leather finger lifts to the lids. Inset retractable brass lifting handles to each side.
The box is lined out in silk and leather.
The lid lined with a beautiful emerald green watermarked silk in lovely condition. Having a further compartment for Notes, again embossed in gold.
There is a large heavy inset brass carrying handle to the lid with rise and fall handle stamped with Rd. Number dating the box 1882-1883, and brass escutcheon.
This is a very rare quality item. The wear internally is exceptionally light, the leather is clean and bright, and the embossed lettering is clear. Externally the green woodgrain leather has faded/changed colour over the last 140+ years and has losses and a few dinks.
The structure of the box is strong and sound and overall is in great original condition.
The key that was with the box when I found it is not the original one. (I have a suspicion this is a Bramah Lock although not stamped.) The key does lock the box but does not remove from the keyhole once locked! I have left it in the box should the new owner want to keep it.
